Mobile Display Technologies

Overview of Mobile Display Technologies

Modern smartphones and tablets use one of two primary display panel technologies: IPS LCD and OLED (including AMOLED). The choice of panel affects power consumption, color accuracy, contrast ratio, outdoor visibility, and repairability. Understanding the differences is essential for diagnosing display complaints and recommending replacements.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) LCD panels require a separate backlight layer, typically an array of LEDs positioned behind or along the edge of the panel. Because the backlight stays on even when pixels display black, true black is impossible — the panel simply blocks most of the backlight. IPS displays are common in budget to mid-range devices and tend to be more cost-effective to replace.
