The OSI Reference Model
Overview
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework developed by ISO that divides network communication into seven discrete layers. Each layer has a specific role, communicates with the layers directly above and below it, and adds or removes a protocol header as data moves down (encapsulation) or up (de-encapsulation) the stack.
Understanding the OSI model is essential for troubleshooting because problems can be isolated to a specific layer. A device that powers on but cannot ping any host likely has a Layer 1 or Layer 2 problem; a device that can ping by IP but not by hostname has a Layer 7 (DNS) problem.
This is one of 42 concept lessons in the full Network+ track.
