Cloud Service Models: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and FaaS

Cloud service models define the division of management responsibility between a provider and a consumer across the infrastructure stack. NIST SP 800-145 formalizes three primary models — Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS) — while Function as a Service (FaaS) has emerged as a widely adopted serverless execution model built on top of IaaS.

The shared responsibility stack

NIST SP 800-145, The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing, defines three service models based on what the cloud provider manages and what the consumer manages. The distinction is often described as a shared responsibility model: the lower the service model on the stack, the more infrastructure responsibility shifts to the consumer; the higher the model, the more responsibility shifts to the provider. Understanding which layer each model covers is foundational to designing secure, cost-appropriate architectures and to understanding who is accountable for patching, availability, and data governance. The shared responsibility model also has direct regulatory implications: compliance controls mapped to infrastructure layers must be assigned to whichever party — provider or consumer — manages that layer.
